Ordover Gallery: Mitch Dobrowner

I went to this gallery with Nicole! We both agreed that our favorite artist is Mitch Dobrowner. I really enjoyed his work because like myself, I like to take pictures of nature and landscapes. His pictures are all in black and white showing the vast horizon of the Earth and the natural phenomenons that occur in it. His work invokes a eerie, yet beautiful feeling that makes me feel at awe with how well he captured the Earth as well as amazed that something like that exist! I couldn't find the picture I liked at the museum at the moment but going to the webpage I found one that also look just as awesome!

Angel's Tree

Viva la revolucion!!!

This is the museum in downtown. I had to go there for another class so it was like killing two birds with one stone. It was pretty cool! For the other class we had to answer these questions and I was put into a group of people that I didn't know but that's fine.. anyways, my favorite piece was one I unfortunately forgot the name of but it was a pimped out bike thing that looked really fancy. I think what the artist was going for was to make it so ultra fancy that it rendered it useless. The other art piece that I enjoyed was the room with the numerous photos of people and the video projection at the end showing a point of view shot of someone walking around a city in what seems like some place in South America. I liked it because it kind of gave me an idea of what it was like to be someone from that region on Earth. The video raised my awareness of the lifestyle of the impoverish and less fortunate. That wasn't my favorite because it made me kind of sad but even so, it impact me in a positive way.

Patrick Ferrell

So in class we watched a photographer that did a photo documentary on the Hurricane in Haiti and all his pictures really touched me. It made me empathize with the Haitian people, especially for the man grieving over his dead daughter. Seeing that he tried to wash her and dress her properly as a last respect to her was really sad. The whole slideshow made me aware of the things photographers have to go through to be able to capture photos to show the public about tragic events.

Edward Burtynsky

I think that I saw this artist in either artist books class or the computer and visual arts class. I'm not sure which one exactly though. But I remember really liking his work. I always thought recycling was a good thing but I never knew what happens after that. His photographs made me think about what happens after what people would think is the end. Which ironically I think, never ends. It reminded of me the plastic Island floating around in the ocean that I've heard about awhile ago where all the trash that has been thrown in the ocean all floats to the plastic island! I should find a picture. anyways, his work really makes me think about how there's always two sides to a story. Nothing can ever be 100% good or 100% bad.

okay, I guess I saw it in artist books class and here's what I wrote about it the first time I saw his work:

oh, and here's wiki's answer about what the plastic garbage island is if you're curious:

Phil Borges- write up on artist

I enjoyed looking at Phil Borges' work because I liked how desaturated his photos looked. There is a lot of depth of field in his photos where everything in the foreground is very clear and the background is unfocused. Even though the background is not in focused it's still pretty. It reminds of an Ansel Adams photograph. With that being said, it his photos also put the main focus on the people and not the background by giving them a little more color, having the background be almost completely desaturated. Not only is his work aesthetically pleasing to look at each and every one of his photographs of people include a story and background information on his subjects. This provides a more intimate moment for viewers when looking at his photographs.

photo diary day 1!/lightroom experiments

i thought about it. and this photo diary thing is pretty hard since my life is pretty much routine. but i'll try to make the best of it and challenge myself!! over the weekend i tried to get to know my camera and then today i took pictures! here are some of them...

rain against my windsheild
experimenting with the camera
my shirt!
underneath my car while it was still wet.
the top part of my front windshield was blue. I enhanced the colors using lightroom!
experimenting with fog on the windsheild.
more fog!
water trailing down the slope towards my car!
the 5th floor at the new parking structure.

today i took pictures while i was in my car in the parking structure. i wanted to document the weather today because it kind of was one of the first days it feels like fall/winter. i like it! i'm kind of over summer. :)

Project Proposal

For my project I wanted to do something like a photo diary where I would take a picture of what I was doing that day or of a picture relating to the thoughts I was thinking at the time. I was kind of inspired of Jim Brandenburg when he took the 90 days picture. But instead of just taking one picture I think I'll take a few each day and see which one I like the most and pick just one out of the bunch to represent my thoughts or feelings that day. And maybe once a week I'll blog 7 pictures and give a short explanation to them or something! That would be cool. Since my subject is broad it will give me a chance to be able to take pictures of all kinds of things but also represent my personality through my blog. I also got the idea from when I uploading pictures from my phone and I noticed that it was kind of like documenting my everyday life and I liked that idea. The difference was that I'll be using a better quality camera this time around. The reason why I wanted to do this is to document my life to show who i am in an intimate manner to strangers and through photographs they get to know me as a person.

Annie Leibovitz 1 & 2

Annie Leibovitz is a famous photographer with works shown in famous magazines and photography with famous people. Her work could be considered a timeline of America's culture and history. She has been taking pictures her whole life and got started with the Rolling Stones. I felt really surprised that I didn't know who she was until this video and slightly ashamed because her work is so great. I got really inspired by her devotion, talent and hard work and you can see it in her work. Prior to seeing this movie about her, I always preferred to take pictures of inanimate objects or landscape pictures, but afterwards, it made me want to try taking pictures of people.

Natalie Fobes

Natalie Fobes is a photographer that worked with National Geographics. Her first story was about the pacific salmon and the people who's lively hoods depend on them. At first I didn't understand her passion for salmon but then as she got more in depth with her story it showed me the cultural aspects of salmon and the importance of it to certain people. and their respect for the fish Her pictures also made me hungry because salmon is one of my favorite things to eat. The second story Natalie Fobes shared with us was her trip to Alaska after a recent oil spill. The whole story made me really sad for all the people and animals effected by the oil spill. It reminded me of the one that's going on right now with the BP oil company. Her photographs made me want to find a way to help everyone that is suffering from this, especially the animals that are effected by the accident.

hello

this is for the photo documentary class!
